Fiberglass pools, set by the crew that builds the deck

Inground fiberglass shells from Leisure Pools and San Juan Pools, placed by Greg Sweatt's own crew and swimming in as little as two to three weeks.

Chapter 01

The shell is the easy decision, the yard around it is not

A fiberglass pool arrives as one piece, so what you are really deciding is shape, depth and which builder's catalog it comes from. San Juan Pools lists 66 models, plus 16 inground fiberglass hot tubs designed by Todd and Kirk Sullivan. Leisure Pools builds in standard fiberglass and in Composite Armour. That is a lot of choice, and it is easy to spend months on it.

A common mistake is picking the pool first and treating the surround as an afterthought. Where the pool sits decides where the steps land, how high the deck runs, where water drains and how far the lawn is from the house. A pool placed before any of that is drawn ends up with a deck wrapped around it instead of a yard that works.

That is why Greg Sweatt, a licensed general contractor with more than 30 years in contracting and landscaping, walks the property before anyone opens a catalog. A lot in Palo Cedro or out toward Redding has trees, slope and a house to relate to, and the model that suits one lot looks wrong on the next.

Two builders, one crew, and the order the work goes in

Palo Cedro Pool & Spa carries two builders so the shell can be matched to the yard. Leisure Pools offers standard fiberglass and Composite Armour, made with vinyl ester resin, and Composite Armour comes with a Lifetime Structural Warranty and a Lifetime Structural Osmosis Warranty. San Juan Pools adds more shapes to choose from. Greg explains how the two differ in person and puts the warranty terms in front of you in writing.

The sequence is the usual one for a shell pool. The hole is excavated to suit the shell, a level base is prepared, and the shell is lifted in and set. Plumbing and equipment are connected, and the backfill goes in as the pool fills with water so the shell stays supported while it settles. The surround comes after that, which is where having the deck and concrete crews on the same team matters.

Because the shell is made ahead of time rather than formed on your lot, a fiberglass pool can be swimming in as little as two to three weeks. Rick and Laurence Proietti wrote that they were informed of every step and what to expect each day with their new pool, and that is how the job is meant to run.

Chapter 03

After the water is in

Once the pool is full, the next questions are how it gets covered, how it gets heated and what sits around it. An Aquamatic cover can be fitted to a new pool or an existing one, see the page on automatic pool covers, and a Sundance spa or swim spa on the same deck is a decision best made while the surround is still on paper.

The decking, the fence line, the stamped or faux rock concrete and the planting all come from the same crew, so there is nobody to chase when something does not line up. The decks, decorative concrete and landscaping pages show how the surround is handled.

“We certainly appreciate the time Greg took in explaining the benefits of San Juan Pools in helping us to make a final decision in our purchase.”

More letters are on the Raves page, and Greg and Paula's story explains why the same crew builds all of it.
