Redwood, rails and stairs

Redwood decks, gazebos and fencing built by the pool crew

Redwood and composite decks, stairs, arbors, gazebos, fencing and outdoor structures, built by the same crew that sets the pool.

Chapter 01

A deck takes more weather here than most owners plan for

A deck looks like a floor, but it behaves like a roof that happens to face up. In the Redding and Palo Cedro area it gets a long hot dry summer that bakes the surface and dries out every board, then a wet winter that soaks the same boards from above and holds moisture at every joint. Material that looks fine on a showroom sample can cup, split or go grey faster than expected after a few of those cycles.

So the real decision is not just colour. It is which material suits the sun your yard gets, how much upkeep you will actually do, and how the deck meets the house, the stairs and whatever else is going up around it. A deck beside a pool or spa has a further job: wet feet, bare feet and a lot of sitting, which asks for good rails, steady footing and boards you can walk on in July.

The other quiet question is whether you want a deck or a patio at all. Each has a place, and the answer depends on how your yard slopes, what the ground does and what you want to look at from the kitchen window.

One crew from the footings to the last rail

Greg Sweatt is a licensed general contractor, Lic# 913884, with more than 30 years in contracting and landscaping, and his crew builds the decks, patios, arbors, gazebos, fencing and outdoor structures at Palo Cedro Pool & Spa. Redwood decks show up again and again in the letters customers have sent. The work starts with a plan for the yard, then framing, stairs and rails built as one piece, so the deck sits right against the house and the ground.

Because the same crew also sets fiberglass pools and pours decorative concrete, the deck is drawn alongside whatever it touches. A spa can be built into a deck, a gazebo can shade the seating beside the water, and the stairs can step down to a concrete walk without three trades arguing over the grade. Josanne Pierce of Millville wrote that the construction of her redwood deck went so smoothly, and named Harrison and Garret from the crew.

Greg is on site daily, so the person who priced the job is the person you see in the yard. If anything needs adjusting, you call him directly. There is no middleman and no runaround between you and whoever is holding the tape.

Chapter 03

From the first deck to the neighbours' decks

A deck is judged over years, not on the day the last screw goes in. Look at how it handles its first hot summer, how the boards take their first winter, and whether the rails still feel solid when a grandchild leans on them. Ask Greg about the upkeep that suits the material you choose, and plan it before you build rather than after the first season.

Robert Livecchi's story is the one we like best. He had a first deck built, liked it enough to have the crew replace his second deck, and then watched his neighbours hire the same crew once they saw it. That kind of repeat work is what a deck builder is really selling.

If your deck is going next to a pool or spa, look at the fiberglass pools and hot tub pages to see how it fits the rest of the yard. Palo Cedro Pool & Spa serves Palo Cedro, Redding, Shasta Dam, Red Bluff and the greater North State, and the consultation and estimate are free.

These guys are extremely professional. Their craftsmanship is second to none. They are very personable, reliable and a pleasure to work with. They did so well on my first deck I had them replace my second deck. They also built decks for my neighbors after they saw what they did for me! Highly recommended!
