The water, sheet A3

Automatic pool covers that actually get closed

Aquamatic Hydramatic automatic safety covers with the patented dual-motor hydraulic drive, fitted to new pools and to pools already in the ground.

Chapter 01

A cover only helps on the days it is closed

Most pool owners know the routine of an uncovered pool: leaves and needles on the surface, grit blown in from the yard, water and heat slipping away overnight. A cover is the obvious answer, and then the question becomes whether anyone will actually drag one across the water every evening. A cover that takes effort is a cover that stays rolled up.

That is the real decision with an automatic cover. You are not shopping for fabric, you are deciding whether closing the pool will be a chore or close to effortless. For a household with children, pets, a busy week or a pool that sits idle for months, the difference between a cover that is quick to close and one that is a struggle is the difference between using it and not.

Pools around Palo Cedro and Redding see big swings in weather, with hot dry summers and wet winters, and the pool sits open to the sky through all of it. That is why Greg Sweatt raises the cover conversation early, ideally while a new pool is still on the drawing sheet, rather than after the deck is down.

The Hydramatic from Aquamatic Cover Systems

Palo Cedro Pool & Spa fits the Hydramatic automatic safety cover from Aquamatic Cover Systems, a company that has been in business for 35 years. Its patented dual-motor hydraulic design is its signature feature, and Greg walks through how that drive works so you know what you are buying and what to expect when it runs.

The cover can be fitted to a new pool or to an existing one. On a new pool the cover is planned alongside the shell and the surround, so the deck edge and the cover line up from the start. On an existing pool Greg measures the pool and the deck edge first and works out how the cover will sit before anything is ordered.

The same crew that sets the shell and frames the deck does the cover fitting, which keeps the deck, the concrete and the cover from fighting each other. If the surround is being redone at the same time, that is a good moment to fold the cover into the plan.

Chapter 03

What it does day to day, and what it does not

Day to day, a closed cover keeps leaves and debris out of the water, so the pool is easier to open up and keep clean. It helps hold in heat and slow the loss of water, which matters in a hot Shasta County summer, and it gives the pool a firm covering when nobody is swimming. Open it when you want to swim, close it when you are done.

A cover is one part of looking after a pool, not the whole of it. It does not replace supervision, fencing or the other precautions a household chooses, and it does not make the water maintenance disappear. Ask Greg what applies to your pool and your yard, and what the Hydramatic is designed to do.

If you are planning a new pool, start with the fiberglass pools page, and if a fence or deck is part of the same plan, see decks, gazebos and fencing.
